If you are new here, WELCOME! If you've been with us for a while, welcome back!
Here we share real stories, travel tips, and resources to help you dream bigger, explore the world, and discover what's possible while walking the autism journey.
The autism journey looks different for every single family — and I never forget that. High support needs, low support needs, verbal, nonverbal, nonspeaking — they all matter here. Every edition, I write with all of you in my heart, because every person on the spectrum deserves to be included — in this community, and in the world. 💙
DREAM

The Fog, The Trucks, and The Rainbow
My husband and I were driving from California to Arizona.
There is a point where the elevation rises — and that is exactly where we were hit by severe low visibility weather conditions.
We had to slow way down. Cars kept passing us, but we felt safer driving slower than everybody else. In conditions like that, it is so much easier to follow the big trucks — the ones with all the lights on — because at least you have something to follow.
Then, once we drove out of the fog and descended into the valley below, we saw it.
A spectacular view. Clouds in the middle, and a rainbow — one end touching down on the left, the other end touching down on the right. What a sight, right there in front of us.
Experiencing that, got me thinking about how we navigate parenthood.
Perhaps after a diagnosis, we find ourselves in that thick fog. The road ahead makes no sense. We cannot see what is coming. But we keep moving forward anyway.
Along the way, we find our big trucks with the lights on — the guides who help us follow a path a little more clearly. The therapists, practitioners, the other parents who have been exactly where we are. The communities that say "we see you." We can choose to stay with one guide for a while, or find another — but they are all heading in the same direction.
And then, slowly, we descend out of the fog. The sky begins to clear. A little rain, a few clouds — and then, a glimpse of that rainbow. We start to see things more clearly. We look around and realize that other people were beside us all along, traveling in the same direction, on the same road, through the same fog.
I was so glad to be home again — and so aware that there are more trips ahead. Some just the two of us. Some with people we love. Others with people we work alongside. All of them helping us see a clearer picture of what lies ahead.
Such is the life of caring for our kids.
Parenthood is a journey full of surprises — but with guides beside us, we are never truly alone. We find our beautiful rainbows on the other side of the clouds.
Thank you for being here to enjoy the journey with us.

I wish I had a picture of the rainbow- instead of focusing on the fog… Lesson learned!

Is Your Family Ready to Travel?
From Your Front Door to the World -
I want to ask you something, and I want you to really sit with it for a moment.
When was the last time you let yourself dream about a family trip — and actually believed it was possible?
Not the "someday maybe" kind of dream. Not the one where you quietly close the browser tab because it feels too complicated, too expensive, or too overwhelming for your family's specific needs.
I mean the real dream. The one where you picture your child's face lighting up at something they have never seen before. The one where you are all together, somewhere new, making a memory that nobody can ever take away.
If that dream feels far away right now — you are exactly where you need to be. Over the next few weeks, we are going to close that distance together, one step at a time.
There Is No Perfect Moment
A thought that comes to mind: there is no perfect moment when your family will suddenly feel ready to travel.
The kids will not be easier next year. The schedule will not magically clear. The anxiety — yours or your child's — will not simply disappear on its own.
Ready is not a feeling you wait for. Ready is something you build.
That is exactly what we are doing here. Starting today.
Your Family Travel Self-Assessment
Before we talk destinations, budgets, or bookings — start with something far more important. Know your traveler.
Grab a notebook or open your notes app and think through these honestly. There are no wrong answers. This is just information — and information is power.
About Your Family
Who are the travelers? Ages, personalities, energy levels?
Who is the most adventurous? Who needs the most reassurance?
What does a hard day look like for your child — and what helps them reset?
What environments does your child thrive in? Loud and busy, or calm and quiet?
How does your child handle changes in routine?
What are your child's biggest sensory triggers? (Sound? Crowds? New foods?)
What brings your child the most joy — and can travel give them more of that?
About Your Travel History
Have you traveled before — road trips, overnight stays, short flights?
What went well? What was harder than expected?
What would have made those experiences easier?
About Your Dream
Where has your family always wanted to go?
What would a successful trip look like for YOUR family?
What is the one thing that has stopped you from booking it?
Write that last answer down. We are going to face it head on over the next 12 weeks.
Managing Expectations — The Real Talk
Family travel with children who have additional needs is not always pretty. There will be a meltdown in an airport. A meal nobody wants to eat. A day where everything feels like too much.
That does not mean you failed. That means you traveled.
Release these right now:
❌ The idea that every moment has to be magical
❌ The belief that one hard moment ruins the whole trip
❌ The comparison to families who seem to travel effortlessly
❌ The feeling that your child's needs make travel impossible
Hold onto these instead:
✅ One great moment can change everything
✅ Your child is watching you choose courage
✅ Every trip teaches you something that makes the next one better
✅ Your family deserves to see the world just as much as anyone else
Small Wins Are the Whole Point
In our world, we know something other parents sometimes miss: small wins are enormous.
Did you read this today? Small win.
Did you answer even one self-assessment question? Small win.
Did you let yourself dream for one minute about where you want to go? Enormous win.
That dream is the whole reason we are here.
This Week:
Complete the self-assessment and write down your answer to this:
"What is the one thing that has stopped my family from traveling — and is that reason still true today?"
Keep that answer. We are going to work through it together.
Next week, we are talking about what to do if you are starting from zero. You do not want to miss it. 🌍

Passport Basics — What Every Traveling Family Needs to Know
📋 Every traveler needs their own passport — including infants.
There are no exceptions for international travel. Every single person on the trip, from newborn to grandparent, needs a valid individual passport.
⏰ Start earlier than you think.
Standard passport processing takes 6–8 weeks. Expedited processing takes 2–3 weeks. If you are starting from zero, begin the process the moment you start thinking about a trip — not after you book it.
📅 Check the expiration date right now.
Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates — not just your departure date. An expiring passport can disqualify you from entry even if it has not technically expired yet.
👶 Child passports expire faster.
Passports issued for children under 16 are only valid for 5 years. Adult passports are valid for 10 years. If your child got their passport when they were small, it may already be expired or expiring soon.
🆘 Emergency options exist — but they cost more.
If your travel is within 72 hours and your passport is expired or missing, you may qualify for an emergency appointment at a U.S. Passport Agency. These services can cost $300–$600 on top of standard fees. It is possible — but stressful and expensive. Plan ahead and avoid it.
📸 Make two copies before every trip.
Leave a physical copy with someone you trust at home, and keep a secure digital photo on your phone. If your passport is lost or stolen abroad, these copies will save you enormous time and stress.
