🌙 Why Autism Parents Need to Prioritize Themselves — The Case for Saying Yes

A couple of months ago, I had one of those weeks. You know the ones — where everything feels heavy and you just need to breathe.

Then a friend posted in our chat group: "I have an extra ticket for a concert tonight, who wants to go?"

No details. No venue. No artist. Just an open door.

Something in me said yes before my brain could argue. A few hours later I was in my best country outfit — boots and all — picking her up and heading into a night I did not plan, first time with this friend one on one.

I am not a country music person. But I had the best time. We talked, we laughed, we cried, and I opened up in ways I honestly did not expect. I needed that more than I knew.

When was the last time you said yes to something before you had all the answers?

What if the adventure you need most is the one you almost talked yourself out of?

I know finding “me” time feels impossible — especially when you are pouring everything into your family, your kids, your daily juggle. But here is what I want you to remember:

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Fill yours first — even if it is with something unexpected, someone new, or a country song you did not know you needed.

Take care of you. So you can take care of your world. 💛

🎃 Sensory-Friendly Halloween for Kids With Autism — Costumes, Timing + Sensory Overload Tips

I would be lying if I said I fully understand the magnitude of the sensory overload that children and individuals with autism experience every single Halloween.

And yet — many of them want to participate. They want to dress up. They want to be part of the excitement. They want to belong to the moment just like every other kid on the block.

The challenge is real. The loud noises. The flashing lights. The scratchy costumes. The sugar. The crowds. The complete unpredictability of it all.

So how do we help our families make it through Halloween not just surviving — but actually enjoying it?

🎃Quick Wins for a Smoother Halloween Night

Before you head out this Halloween, here are three things worth knowing right now:

🥜 The Teal Pumpkin Project

If your child has food allergies or dietary restrictions, look for homes displaying a teal pumpkin out front.

🦷 The Candy Buyback — A Real Thing That Kids Love

Many pediatric dentists run Halloween candy buyback programs where kids trade their candy haul for money, prizes, or toys. It solves the "how much candy is too much" battle in one genius move — and kids often love it because they feel like they made a deal.

Search "Halloween candy buyback [your city]" to find participating dentists near you.

🧩 Sensory-Friendly Halloween Events Near You

Many cities now host low-stimulation Halloween events specifically designed for families impacted by autism and sensory processing differences — earlier hours, quieter environments, familiar formats, and no jump scares.

Check your local Autism organizations, parks and recreation department, YMCA, or church Trunk-or-Treat events are also excellent lower-stimulation options worth checking this week.

Some years Halloween goes beautifully. Some years it ends in tears — yours and theirs — before you even reach the second house.

Both are real. Both are okay.

You are not failing when you leave early. You are not failing when you skip it entirely. You are succeeding every single time you show up and try — in whatever way works for YOUR family.

🎃 Happy Halloween — may your night be full of laughter, comfort, and magic on your own terms.

Do You Need a Notarized Letter to Travel Internationally With Your Child?

👨‍👩‍👧 Traveling Without Both Parents? Read This Before You Book

This one catches families completely off guard at the border.

If you are traveling internationally with your children without the other parent — whether you are a single parent, part of a blended family, or simply traveling solo with your kids — many countries require a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent.

Requirements vary by country and situation. Some border agents ask for it. Some do not. But being caught without it can mean being turned away at the border — and that is a situation nobody wants.

Before you book any international trip:

Research your specific destination's entry requirements for minors
Contact that country's embassy or consulate directly to confirm current rules
Have a notarized consent letter prepared even if you are not sure it will be required
It takes one hour to prepare. It could save your entire trip.

📱 Your Family's Digital Document Vault — Do This Today

Before your next trip — any trip — take clear photos of every passport, birth certificate, and ID for every traveler in your family.

Store them in a password-protected folder. Google Drive, Dropbox, and your phone's secure folder all work perfectly.

If documents are ever lost or stolen abroad, these copies will save you enormous time and stress at the nearest U.S. Embassy.

Ten minutes today. Potentially trip-saving later.
